Race 1 brought a big success and a big disappointment for Zengő-Dension Team as Duarte Félix da Costa finally had an untroubled race and finished 2nd in Brands Hatch but Gábor Wéber crashed and retired just like Imre Birizdó. Andrea Larini finished 13th.
Yesterday Portuguese driver Duarte Félix da Costa claimed his best ever starting grid position since he has driven for Zengő-Dension Team and all he said after the session that he wants to avoid any problems and finally show that the pace is there in the package formed by the alliance between him and the team.
On Saturday he was given the chance to prove this statement as he successfully conserved his 2nd position after the start and he was even able to attack leader Daniel Welch for the first place. For a brief period he could get ahead of his opponent but Welch could gain back his lead and went on to win Race 1.
This made Duarte to settle down for 2nd but was forced to defend himself heavily against the attacks launched by Eoin Murray. The Irish driver was one of the quickest among the frontrunners especially after he passed Gábor Wéber and later Freddy Nordstrom.
Wéber tried to take advantage of the situation and went side by side with Nordstrom but their cars touched and Wéber made Nordstrom to spin out of Turn 2. This already made Wéber to fall back in the order and let Lourenco Da Veiga to pass him and Michael Rossi to get alongside him as they went into Turn 2.
Gábor Wéber and Duarte Félix da Costa
The speed difference was considerable and the two cars collided to each other. Wéber was on the inside, he had the line but his opponent turned into him. The front right of Wéber's car got damaged and the championship leader was forced to retire from the race and will start Race 2 tomorrow from the back of the grid.
Retiring from Race 1 is the worst possible scenario for the championship especially since title rival Michael Rossi finished 5th after the collision and will start Race 2 from 4th which means he will have a big gain on Wéber this weekend.
Race 1 didn't work out for the other two cars managed by Zengő-Dension Team either. Imre Birizdó also retired as a result of a collision between Michal Matejovsky, him and David Nye that caused a puncture on his car. This is a great disappointment as the young karting talent showed a significant improvement over the course of the weekend.
A race to forget was for Andrea Larini as well. The Italian driver took advantage of the retirements ahead of him but he was still off the pace on Race 1 so he is left without other options than try to improve tomorrow.
Daniel Welch took a commanding victory ahead Zengő-Dension Team's Duarte Félix da Costa, Eoin Murray, Stian Poulsen and Michael Rossi. Lourenco Veiga finished 6th ahead Pepe Oriola and Francisco Carvalho who will be on pole tomorrow afternoon when Race 2 will take place.
