Zengő-Dension Team’s and Norbert Kiss’s campaign in the 2010 SEAT Leon Supercopa has got cut short following Kiss being hit in Jerez that resulted severe damages on his car. A troubled penultimate round marks the end of the season for Kiss and the career of his almost legendary car.
Jerez hosted the last but one round of the 2010 SEAT Leon Supercopa season where Norbert Kiss and Zengő-Dension Team aimed to get over the less than successful showing back in Navarra. Kiss vowed to extract more from the package in Jerez as the track’s characteristics suited better for him.
Despite all the big plans the weekend hot damaged before it even begun as a deleted flight and a puncture made the service truck of the team arrive at a very late time to Jerez which made it impossible to prepare Norbert Kiss’s car in time for the practice sessions.
Kiss lost valuable tracktime while his mechanics were working to make the car ready to roll following the damages it suffered in Navarra but despite their efforts, they couldn’t make it to be driveable until only a few minutes were remaining from the session.
It was a big hit for Kiss but he still managed to take 3rd on the grid for Race 1 behind Marc Carol and Miguel Toril on a session that saw several penalties before the final classification was released. Third place can be considered a success regarding the circumstances, especially since the main task was to keep third in the overall standings as well.
This aim was made impossible to fulfil on Lap 1 of Race 1 following two incidents including the latter that took him out of the race. At first Pepe Oriola made contact with Kiss’s car that damaged Kiss’s suspension but a few meters later Francisco Carvalho drove into his car and Kiss ended up in the gravel trap.
Race 1 was over for Kiss just after a few kilometres and the damages also meant that he was unable to take part on Race 2 that took place right after the checkered flag signalled the end of Race 1. Kiss’s only team mate this weekend was György Kontra who managed to take a 15th place finish on Race 1 and a 12th on Race 2. Both results were encouraging for him and the team as well especially following Kiss’s disastrous weekend.
It all continued on Sunday
The series of troubles didn’t come to its end on Saturday as Kiss retired again from Race 3 as well. The Hungarian driver made a good start from 21st on the grid and climbed higher and higher up in the order right until he took 12th shortly after the end of Lap 1.
His charge ended on Lap 7 when he informed the team that he got a puncture after he was hit again by one of his opponents. Therefore György Kontra remained the only driver who were still in the race for Zengő-Dension Team and managed to take a 15th position.
Not only the weekend was disastrous for the team, its consequences are also disappointing as the post-race inspection revealed that the rollcage in Kiss’s car got damaged which made team principal Zoltán Zengő to withdraw his operation from the season finale in Montmelo on the last weekend of October.
This damage also likely to mean the end of the career of the SEAT Leon Supercopa car driven by Norbert Kiss as the rollcage is a key part to provide the safety for the driver. The car Kiss drove is likely to be one of the most successful SEAT Leon Supercopa ever driven as it helped Norbert Kiss to take back to back championship titles in the Hungarian SEAT Leon Super Cup in 2007 and 2008 before it was handed over to Gábor Wéber for his victorious SEAT Leon EuroCup campaign and retaken by Norbert Kiss for the 2010 SEAT Leon Supercopa.
