Zengő-Dension Team's Norbert Michelisz is out of Race 1 of the Czech Republic following a crash with 2008 world champion Yvan Muller. Michelisz was attacking Augusto Farfus to take 5th after Safety Car left the circuit. He will start Race 2 from the back of the grid.
Norbert Michelisz was forced to retire his car from Race 1 of the Czech Republic shortly after crashing with Yvan Muller and Colin Turkington when the Hungarian driver tried to get past by the Briton accelerating slowly after the end of a Safety Car period.
Despite Michelisz not doing the start of his life, several small contacts allowed him to gain positions and by the end of Lap 1 he was driving on the 6th place. Safety Car was deployed on Lap 2 because marshalls needed time to remove cars involved in a four car crash.
Jordi Gené and Tom Coronel immediately retired the latter was hit by Andy Priaulx who was able to continue the race with a damaged front bumper. Before the Safety Car came onto the track Norbert Michelisz already started to battle with Yvan Muller who was pushing him from behind but the French driver couldn't get past by the young Hungarian racer.
Robert Huff was leading ahead Gabriele Tarquini, Colin Turkington, Alain Menu, Augusto Farfus, Norbert Michelisz, Yvan Muller, Michel Nykjaer, Andy Priaulx with a damaged front bumper and Tiago Monteiro on 10th place.
Safety Car was on track for a reasonably long time and everybody were hopeful in the pits that Michelisz will be able to attack Turkington once the race get restarted. This was exactly what the Hungarian driver tried and closed in on his British opponent.
Race 1 in Brno
Michelisz was right behind the Briton driver and managed to get ahead of him in the start finish straight. The only problem was that he was ahead already before the start/finish line which meant that he would have needed to back off a bit and let Turkington to retake the position.
This didn't mean that Michelisz lost the chance to catch him in Turn 1 but the moves by Michelisz and Turkington let Yvan Muller to get close to them. Muller was on the outside and he made contact with Michelisz after the Hungarian driver was hit by Colin Turkington.
The crash that occurred near halfway into the race and immediately took Michelisz out of the race. The Hungarian driver's car stopped in the gravel trap in Turn 1 and didn't get back to the pits until the end of the race.
Turkington was also involved in the crash but managed to continue the race unlike Yvan Muller whose car was repaired in the pits but he returned to his mechanics to end the race and start from the same row as Michelisz on Race 2.
Retirement obviously brought disappointment for the team but Zoltán Zengő stated "there is always laughter after crying" and along with the mechanics of the team he started to work on the car to get it done for Race 2. Most of the team's attention turned to discuss the reasons and causes of the accident following the retirement and the to do list before Race 2.
Meanwhile Huff kept his lead over Tarquini and won the race ahead the Italian driver. They were joined by Alain Menu on the podium. Augusto Farfus finished 4th, Andy Priaulx took 5th after he was let to go by Colin Turkington who got 6th, Michel Nykjaer ended up 7th ahead pole sitter for Race 2, Darryl O'Young.
