The duo formed by Norbert Michelisz and Giorgio Sanna was on its way to claim 2nd position and possibly attack for the victory on Race 1 of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo on the Hungaroring before Michelisz was forced to retire due a mechanical failure.
Things turned serious as Race 1 of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo was held at the Hungaroring on Saturday afternoon. Following Norbert Michelisz's impressive performance on qualifying, his team mate Giorgio Sanna, factory test driver of Automobili Lamborghini started the first run from 2nd on the grid.
Race 1 begun with a lot of movements in the order as Giorgio Sanna successfully managed to take the lead for a brief period before he was overtaken by Fabio Babini whose car only took 8th on the qualifying but posted impressive laptimes right at the beginning of the race.
Babini took control of the race while Sanna kept 2nd place until the pit stop window opened after 15 minutes elapsed from the available 40 minutes duration. This was the time when Norbert Michelisz got into the car and begun to chase the cars ahead of him.
Michelisz returned to the track on the 5th place and was running 4th after everybody got over the mandatory pitstop which caused a noticeable loss in terms of track positions and time but it didn't take long for the Hungarian driver to get up to speed and posted the absolute best sector time in sector 2 in his second lap after taking over the car.
The laptimes posted by Michelisz were impressive, he did several laps in the region of 1:53 and successfully passed two cars to take back the 2nd position that was lost at the pitstop. 10 minutes before the end of the race only one driver, Cedric Leimer was driving ahead of him but Michelisz looked set to catch him before the end of the duration.
As the last quarter of the race was still available for Michelisz to get right behind his opponent a chance of a spectacular battle emerged but unfortunately this feeling didn't last long as 8 minutes before the end of the race Michelisz spun in Turn 13 and lost ground immediately.
It meant that the efforts to get the car onto the podium eroded over just a few seconds especially when Michelisz reported that a technical failure caused him to spin with the car and the engine changed to emergency mode which made it obvious for Michelisz that he has only one task left; to bring the car home.
Retiring from a race from the 2nd place is always a disappointment but on Race 1 it was proved that Michelisz's and Sanna's combination forms one of the most competitive duos over the course of the weekend and the performance that the Hungarian driver is able to extract with such a limited tracktime with the car is a good prosper for the second day of the weekend.
Not only Michelisz's car had technical issues on Saturday as the #2 car of Csaba Walter and Stephane Lemeret was forced to spend the majority of the day in the paddock because problems with ECU occurred that made it impossible for Walter and Lemeret to take part in the qualifying and they could only manage to do 2 laps on Race 1 due further technical problems.
On Sunday the events will start very early with Race 2 of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo beginning at 8:50 and the final battle takes place at 12:05. The car #1 driven by Norbert Michelisz and Giorgio Sanna will start from 8th on the grid as a result of their place in the classification.
