Race day in Brands Hatch got underway with the last session before Race 1 for the FIA WTCC which is the 15 minutes warm up. After Chevrolet's clean sweep on qualifying this session was ruled by the BMWs while Norbert Michelisz increased his mileage ahead of the decisive races later today.
Today is one of the high spots of the 2010 FIA WTCC season as the field is going to race on the legendary Brands Hatch circuit in a few hours time. The awaiting atmosphere is already sensible as the media centre is getting busier than it has ever been this season and an already large crowd is watching the events around the circuit.
Sunday started with the main feature of the weekend, the field of the FIA World Touring Car Championship completed a 15 minutes warm up session which saw the dominance of the BMWs after Chevrolet's clean sweep on qualifying.
As it was expected reigning BTCC champion Colin Turkington topped the timesheets with a 1:33.818 ahead the two works BMWs driven by three time world champion Andy Priaulx and team mate Augusto Farfus.
The pecking order changed a bit compared to the qualifying but Chevrolets remained close to the frontrunners as Robert Huff ended up 4th just 0.227 seconds behind Turkington. Chevrolet's British driver was followed by team mate Alain Menu who has won the most of the races here among the drivers of the field.
Dutchman Tom Coronel was the fastest driver using a SEAT Leon TDI car, he finished 8th with more than 6 tenths of a second behind Turkington but ahead of Polestar Racing's Volvo C30 driven by Robert Dahlgren.
Meaningless result for Michelisz
Following a successful advancement into Q2 yesterday by Norbert Michelisz, the Hungarian driver finished again down in the order as he took 19th with a 1:35.001. Michelisz's time came by an early effort, the latter stage of the session was used by him to get more mileage under his belt in Brands Hatch before the races later today.
Michelisz was among the busier drivers of the session as he completed 8 laps without stopping in the pitlane and posted reasonably constant laptimes which is a positive outlook for the races later today.
Race 1 will start at 12:05 local time to be followed by the second installment at 14 local time, Norbert Michelisz is expected to start from P8 following an engine change in Andy Priaulx BMW.
