Norbert Michelisz returned into the Spanish SEAT Leon Supercopa and earned the 4th position on the grid following penalties that affected his results over the qualifying session. Zengő Dension Team's drivers Attila Solti and György Kontra managed 24th and 25th places.
The qualifying session for the first race could have worked out better for the Zengő Dension Team as the changeable conditions made the weather forecast pretty much unpredictable and this left Norbert Michelisz and his teammates on a circuit that could have been faster.
“It was a good qualifying but we made a bit wrong call in terms of tactics. We thought that the track will dry up but it didn’t happen that way. As we set it up fully for a dry circuit, I had to come back to let the guys to change the setup. Then heavy rain started to fall. Fortunately I did my better laptimes in the rain so this makes us hoping. Unfortunately it is very hard to predict whether it is going to rain or not”, commented Michelisz.
Norbert ended up 4th on the grid, a bit more than 0.5 seconds adrift of pole-sitter and long-time rival Oscar Nogués. This is the official summary of the results but it should be noted that towards the end of the session Michelisz’s two fastest laptimes were deleted by the stewards. This didn’t affect Nogués as he topped the timesheet with 1:59.678 as Michelisz’s fastest approved laptime was 2:00.180 after he completed 11 laps in Valencia.
No more Hungarian cars were able to break into the top 20 on the starting grid as Attila Solti finished 24th by setting 2:03.417 while György Kontra managed 2:04.341 on the 25th place despite doing three more laps than Solti.
“Driving on this pace it was pretty pleasuring. I wasn’t pushing for the speed; I brought back the car in safe and soundness. I hope the track dries up for the evening but it doesn’t look like that”, Solti commented after the qualifying.
György Kontra was not as happy as his teammate but said that the 25th spot on the grid was a positive surprise for him. He added: “This was a wet qualifying and I don’t like the rain. All in all I was just experimenting with the track. My aim was not to be on the limit and despite this a 25th place worked out. This made me surprised as well.”
The qualifying session was decisive for the start of the first out of two sprint races on Saturday, followed by a 14 laps-long main event on Sunday.
