Sunday's Race 2 of SEAT Leon EuroCup saw two serious accidents but without any injuries which was down to pure luck. Alexey Dudukalo's and Francisco Carvalho's flying into the barriers caused a Safety Car period and later a red flag.
The last task for Zengő-Dension Team was Race 2 for SEAT Leon EuroCup in Brands Hatch on Sunday afternoon. Following Gábor Wéber's and Imre Birizdó's retirement from Race 2 both drivers started from the back of the grid while Duarte Félix da Costa was 7th and Andrea Larini in the midfield on 13th.
Wéber said yesterday that he would need around 5 cars to retire to have a chance to score a point from last on the grid but despite this he quickly passed three cars and gained 9 positions over the first two laps. Imre Birizdó conserved his 18th place while Andrea Larini made small progress and moved up to 10th. Duarte Félix da Costa slipped back to 8th.
Drivers didn't have a lot of time to make further moves as the Safety Car was deployed following a massive crash into the tyre barrier in Turn 1. Alexey Dudukalo was pushed out of the track and the Russian driver was out of the race. His car damaged badly which meant that the barriers had to be repaired.
This period broke the rhythm in the drivers and soon after the restart Brands Hatch saw the worst ever accident in the three year history of the SEAT Leon EuroCup. It started as a simple contact, Francisco Carvalho started to slide towards the barrier as a result of he was pushed and unfortunately the Portuguese driver hit the barrier in such a wrong angle that made his car to fly into the air.
Carvalho's car turned around its centerline and fell among the marshalls who were outside the barriers. It was only pure luck that all of them survived the accident without injuries as it was a frightening accident which resulted an almost immediate red flag.
Because of the damages the barrier suffered the race was not restarted which means that Race 2 will be classified based on just 6 laps. At the end of Lap 6 Spanish youngster Pepe Oriola was leading ahead championship leader Michael Rossi and Eoin Murray.
Despite the crash Francisco Carvalho classified 4th ahead Stian Paulsen, DIego Puyo, RIcardo Bravo and Zengő-Dension Team's Duarte Félix da Costa. His team mates Andrea Larini and Gábor Wéber finished 10th and 11th respectively which means that Wéber leaves Brands Hatch without any points juts like Imre Birizdó who showed considerable progress over the course of the weekend.
SEAT Leon EuroCup will be back in two weeks in the Czech Republic on the Brno Circuit which will be almost like a home soil for Zengő-Dension Team.
